The CensorTrack database, which is operated by the Media Research Center’s (MRC) Free Speech America initiative, has officially documented more than 6,000 cases of censorship.
According to a statement, the aggressive censorship efforts target any type of information that harms the Democratic Party, the Biden administration or otherwise runs counter to the Left’s narrative and gaslighting the American people. Since its launch in September 2020, researchers from CensorTrack have worked tirelessly to track down and document the censorship of some of the most high-profile cases of de-platforming, as well as the takedowns of those who have written to MRC to investigate their cases of censorship.
Meanwhile, Breitbart shared examples of bans, deleted content and other speech restrictions related to a variety of issues. These include legitimate criticisms of the incumbent president and his administration, elections, climate change, transgenderism, abortion, the critical race theory, the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), as well as resultant vaccines, lockdowns, masking, government policies and other pandemic responses.
“The media and the radical left continue to deny censorship of conservatives,” said MRC President Brent Bozell in February. (Related: Massive censorship-industrial complex comprised of Big Tech complex comprised of Big Tech, corporations, government, NGOs, “fact-checkers” and more.)
Big Tech appears to be censoring contrary voices at the behest of the White House, with several politicians among them. These include incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), alongside former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). Even journalists weren’t spared, as evidenced by the censorship of podcaster Joe Rogan, radio host Dan Bongino and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
Here are some notable instances of censorship conducted by various tech platforms.
An Instagram video from the libertarian nonprofit Atlas Society that criticized the Biden administration’s border policies was censored as “false information.”
In another case, American comedian and talk show Bill Maher found himself the victim of tech censorship. The liberal talk show host known for his acerbic and sometimes controversial political commentaries, was censored by Instagram fact-checkers for his post linking soaring inflation with Biden’s policies.
CensorTrack has included a number of cases from Twitter prior to Elon Musk’s October 2022 acquisition of the company, which documented the “apogee of censorship” under the tenure of then-CEOs Jack Dorsey and Parag Agrawal, including the ban on the use of the term “groomer” and the censorship of conservative satire accounts.
Additionally, the database also covered Musk’s revelations of Twitter’s partisan censorship to protect Hunter and the Biden family.
An episode in Twitter’s ongoing campaign to silence the Christian satire site Babylon Bee reportedly involved locking its founder Adam Ford out of his account “for simply trolling the platform with benign humor,” NewsBusters reported in March.
According to a snapshot shared by Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon, “The Babylon Bee’s founder @Adal4d has been locked out of Twitter for hateful conduct.”
Dillon tweeted: “We’re told our account will be restored in 12 hours, but the countdown won’t begin until we delete the tweet that violates the Twitter Rules.”
“You may not promote violence against, threaten or harass other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability or serious disease,” the message from the platform read.
Dr. Jordan B. Peterson revealed YouTube had removed his video titled “Trans: When ideology meets reality” – in which he and author Helen Joyce discussed gender ideology – for allegedly violating the platform’s “hate speech policy.”
“Content glorifying or inciting violence against another person or group of people is not allowed on YouTube. We also don’t allow any content that encourages hatred of another person or group of people based on their membership in a protected group,” YouTube stated in part under the “How your content violated the policy” section.
“I have now officially been accused of hate speech by YouTube, Let’s be clear about this: that is a direct accusation [of] conduct deemed criminal in many jurisdictions. This is absolutely not OK, @YouTube. Not OK,” Peterson responded on Twitter, tagging YouTube.
As documented by CensorTrack, tech company Microsoft, a major force behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT and two organizations that “curate blacklists of media organizations” – Global Disinformation Index (GDI) and NewsGuard – also engage in censorship.
For instance, Microsoft-owned LinkedIn shut down the account of climate scientist Gregory Wrightstone, a geologist who serves as executive director of the CO2 Coalition and reviewer for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, “for posting data undermining the official narrative on climate change.”
According to NewsBusters, the worst case of documented COVID-19 censorship came from Facebook, which deleted the Great Barrington Declaration’s account page – where prominent international disease experts opposed and criticized measures imposed by many world governments that have been scientifically proven to have had “little to no effect” on COVID-19 mortality.
“We now have proof that Facebook’s fact-checker program actively suppressed valid debate about the origins of COVID-19 and instead promoted Chinese propaganda. Facebook must end their fraudulent fact-check program now that we know how dangerous it is,” said Bozell.
